Obesity

Obesity is fast emerging as a health hazard. A large number of people, all over the world, suffer from it. It is an abnormal condition of the body caused by neglecting the nature. It can occur at any age in either sex.

It is mainly due to an excess food intake in comparison to requirements, bad and faulty habits of living and eating and sedentary way of life –- prevalent mainly amongst in affluent section of society and women (generally after pregnancy and at menopause). The major causes are –- eating of junk food, crash dieting, highly rich refined food, overeating, swallowing of food, imbalance of alkaline-acid ratio (80:20), improper chewing, lack of physical exercise. Besides many medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, hormonal problems etc. can also cause over weight. Eating more calories than you burn adds weights to the body and the major portion of excess calories from eating too much fat – ice-cream, cakes, and biscuits. People who take high fat meal are more likely to overeat and add to their obesity. It is also observed that a genetic tendency to obesity is passed on to children from their mother.

Food is the raw material used by the VITAL FORCE to nourish the body. We eat to live, not live to eat. It is the right kind of food digested that matters and not the wrong kind of food eaten and too much of it that harms the system in some way or the other. Good health means a way of life, when a person is physically, mentally, socially and spiritually healthy. When an imbalanced food is taken, toxins are found in the body. When they are not eliminated by the body’s different systems, they damage the organs of the systems. Obesity is a serious health hazard. It is a major cause of many ailments as it puts strain on the heart, kidney, liver, large weight bearing joints such as hips, knees, ankles. It has rightly been said, “the longer the belt, the shorter the life”. Over weight persons are prone to several diseases like heat failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, gout, liver and gall-bladder disorders.

Obesity depends upon your weight. While there is no fixed ideal weight for any given weight, there is a correct weight range – an over weight range, a normal range, an under weight range. And these also vary depending upon whether you are men or women and your age. Generally a person is considered over weight if he is 10-20 percent above desirable weight for height and body frame. Different variables like Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Hip Circumference (WAC) are selected to measure obesity. If the BIM is greaten then 25, your are overweight, and if it is greater than 30, you are obese. The higher the BMI, the more problems with high blood pressure, serum cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar and kidney disorders.

A very simple method to know what should be an approximate normal weight is to reduce 110/105 from your height in centimeters. For example, if your height is 170 cm., then the approximate body weight should be around 60-65 kg.

TREATMENT

How to cure obesity?

Anti-obesity drugs are not the solution to weight loss. They are of no use. They only help the patient to get started on a weight loss programme. His appetite is reduced and he eats less. His weight starts losing and he feels somewhat encouraged. This motivates him to continue with this eating plan even after the drug are withdrawn. Its side effects are many. The person develops various gastrointestinal problems —- and drastic loss of body fluids. These are ultimately harmful. Loosing weight rapidly and then gaining it back (after the drugs are stopped) puts you at even higher risk for heart disease. Adopting natural means is the best method to overcome obesity. It is best to lose only about 1kg. a week. This way it lasts. You need to cut only about 500 calories a day. Take food low in calories and low in fat and high in carbohydrates and high in fibre.

Avoid junk food, and crash dieting. Cut your intake of eating to half. See if you are still hungry. If you are not, stop, relax and enjoy. Take no more. Make light and healthy selections. Baked potatoes and sweet potatoes. Beans and Lentils. Whole grain cereals. Bananas, Berries, Melons. Skin milk and Skin milk products. Eat apple instead of chocolate or fried snacks. Take Juice fast from time to time. These foods give your not only the energy you need but also help you to lose weight – without feeling hungry. They also keep your blood sugar level stable.
