Astrology Jyotish and Yoga

Whatever the two letters in the word Kala [time] signify that is My Body… day succeeds night because of the movements by rotation of the Sun, the Moon and the other Heavenly Bodies. Therefore it is not right to speak of Time (Kala) as identical with night and day. – Tantrarajatantra XXXV.

A very integral part of the Mind Body Soul , Astrology –Jyotish, is a very important aspect of the Yogic traditions in . Not only used to judge timings for initiation and many other rites, but it also has a very deep philosophical and highly practical application , used to help reach the self realization . It drastically differs from the astrology widely used in the Western world and known as Tropical Astrology.

The Tropical Astrology is in practice in the Western world for hundreds of years, and the starting point of the zodiac is taken to commence with the Spring Equinox. Due to the Astronomical phenomenon known as precession, this starting point tracks backwards app. fifty one inches of arc every year against the background of the cosmic stars. Particularly at one point, both sidereal and tropical zodiacs coincided – It occurred in the 3rd or 4th century AD. Since that day, the two zodiacs inexorably separated from each other.

Separation is yet not absolute because the signs share a common arc of app. 6 degrees. A tropical Astrologer emphasizes that the Moon is in Aries 10 degrees, but he probably doesn’t realize that the Moon occupies a particular point in the constellation of Pisces of about 16 degrees. Siderealists and tropicalists emphasize as if they were referring to the same constellations, there is but a gap of 24 degrees separating one from the other.

A usual and rough ready system of conversion between the Zodiacs is by adding 6 degrees to tropical longitudes & subtracting a sign. Astrological texts rarely draw attention to these discrepancies, but when the matter is referred, the defense seems to stick to the position that astrology is connected with symbolism; Zodiac does not have real affinity with the position of stars in any way whatsoever. These assertions attract ridicule on Astrology from the Astronomers community which totally scientific.

Sidereal astrology is not some new variation and the father of Western sidereal Astrology Cyril Fagan, expressed it, as the grand-daddy’ of all zodiacs.

Large parts of 1 billion plus people in the Indian Subcontinent practice a kind of sidereal Astrology even today. There are though differences of opinions among Western siderealists and the Hindu Pundits relating to the starting point (fiducially) of this Zodiac, but they are small. The real differences come in interpreting, and we all here owe Cyril Fagan, Brigadier Roy Firebrace, Garth Allen and many of the dedicated and devoted Souls a huge debt.

It is very much possible to synthesize the modern and the ancient and use the best of both the knowledges.

Sidereal astrology emerged in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Althrough the true Tarot, teachings assign the starting point of the zodiac to the bright star famous as “Regulus” and is in Leo. It measures Right Ascension and Longitude from that starting point, not from a supposition point divided by the Equinox and called the Zero degree of Aries, In reality though now far removed from the constellation of this name, which is adopted by the Western or Modern Astrology and Astronomy . An Elizabethan Alchemist and Rosicrucian Robert Fludd, is credited for using the sidereal Zodiac, as per The Hermetic Journal.
