The contemporary youth – an icon of energy and vibrancy reflects all shades from black to white. The persona of youth has undergone stupendous transformation in terms of outlook and ideals in the wake of societal and attitudinal changes.
The basic image that is conjured up thinking of youth is a college campus buzzing with activities of outstanding students. The outstanding students is a mixture of those students standing out and those who actually out stand. Both have their own aspiration, for some want to reach the stars and some are happy only to see stars in the day. However, there are more dimensions to this localized bundle of energy than meets the eye. A few days back Stephen Hawking raised a doubt, “Can humans sustain another 100 years?” Though certain natural calamities are beyond human control, in the context of present global socio-political conditions also our future looked very grim to me. But my fears were allayed and a new ray of hope arose with what I saw the youth involved in.
Today’s youth is highly informative, aware and fast paced. We associate a number of adjectives with youth like enthusiastic, fun-loving, outgoing, independent and even reckless at times. But the word “responsible” does not seem to be closely identified with the young and hip. However, it is right there that the transformation is visible. They are not blind to the world around them that has millions of deprived and downtrodden people. In the 1960’s and 70’s also the fiery youth had aspirations for a egalitarian society and fuelled by Marxism, they set out to change the social and political order, rebelling against. The aristocracy and bureaucracy. But soon the ideals clashed with personal ns and political gai the movement went awry. One thing that history has repeatedly showed us is that aggression does not make people or situations change for any better. It requires patience and selflessness to reform the world. Surprising though it may sound, but there exists a sense of social responsibility in the youths of today to which they have given a physical form.
Yes, it doesn’t gel well to think of our young protagonist popularly known to be dancing on rock and jazz past midnight, lost in the smoke of paper chimney in his hand and drowned in the glasses of Bacardi, to be assuming social responsibility when he stumbles on personal responsibility itself. But to the advantage of the world, there is a class of protagonists who spend time at places other than lounge and club. They haven’t given up on the charms of youth, fun and frolic or shunned parties and hanging out with friends. However, they have made a conscious decision to bring about a positive change in some one else’s life. It is extremely gladdening and inspiring to see how college friends have formed groups like Sanesha, Kshana, Toybank, etc and started street schools for the slum dwellers, organizing events to collect funds and providing it to other NGOs, providing gifts and toys to the hapless street kids for whom childhood has completely different picture. Another group of college goers launched an online magazine, through which they collect resources and contribute to groups like Sanesha.
Theirs is a small informal initiative, running from their homes, public parks and temples, managing with just sufficient funds and roping in as many volunteers as possible. They neither harbour political aspirations nor attract media or frame lofty constitutions and regulations for their groups, but they are still quietly working and working to make a difference in somebody’s life. It is not the size of the project that matters but the sensitivity and responsibility that does, which these youth have carefully and caringly displayed.
The unnecessarily racing and zooming of cars and bikers on the road made me wonder if the youth in the slightest cared for their father’s hard earned money, rising petrol demands and prices or even their own life. But I regret my folly of generalizing a generation’s attitude. While there is a lot of media coverage over the escalating drug abuse and resultant recklessness in the youth, there is an equal need to highlight the youth in their different colours and acknowledge their modest human endeavours to encourage them more towards personal and social responsibility. It does not imply that our responsible protagonists have relinquished the peppiness from their age; they are very much the hip hop crowd, enjoying themselves and may be even smoking and boozing at times. But while they know that they are privileged to enjoy life on their own, there are thousands of such people whose tiniest joy and wish is dependent on somebody’s mercy and care. It is the ability of these college goers to carry on with their own grind but still empathize with that street child, lend him a smile and make even the faintest difference in his life that makes them stand tall in my eyes.
There is a chance and hope for our world and our race because the torch bearers of future have sparks of energy and sense of human responsibility which they have channeled to a higher cause. To do good, it does not require so much money as a clear intention and attention. Deepak Chopra in one of his books talks about the Law of Dharma or the Law of Purpose in Life and says that we are on earth for a reason and purpose, every human being has a special and unique talent and he is capable of doing at least one thing better than anybody else in the world. The purpose of our life is to recognize this unique talent and then use it for our betterment by applying it to serve others.
He writes, “When you combine the ability to express your unique talent with service to humanity, then you make full use of the Law of Dharma”. We are blessed with infinite potentiality and with the power to manifest every desire into reality. However, when the desires of personal growth and success are coupled with the desire to serve our fellow beings, the energies of the Universe work faster to fulfill our desires and shower us with affluence and abundance. A look at these young boys and girls seems like Deepak Chopra’s words being put into practice. These youth have nothing material to gain except immense satisfaction and peace of mind while bringing about a difference in other’s lives. They have become conscious about their purpose and responsibility in life and most importantly have set out to deliver it diligently. Here they are enjoying their lives and creating opportunities for hundreds of others to enjoy theirs as well. Despite the evils penetrating and plaguing our life and world, there is still a reason to smile and feel safe about our survival because humanity and goodness is still our youths’ companion. Cheers!
